"THE JEW TRAIN": ZOHRAN MAMDANI'S APPOINTMENTS DIRECTOR RESIGNS AFTER ANTISEMITIC SOCIAL MEDIA HISTORY EXPOSED

NEW YORK CITY — Before he has even taken the oath of office, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is facing his first major administration scandal, resulting in the abrupt resignation of a key transition official over antisemitic social media posts.

Catherine Almonte Da Costa, who had just been named Mamdani’s Director of Appointments—a powerful role responsible for staffing the new city government—stepped down immediately after the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of New York/New Jersey flagged a disturbing history of online rhetoric.

"The Jew Train" and Other Slurs

The controversy erupted when reports surfaced regarding Almonte Da Costa’s social media activity from 2011 and 2012. The posts, which have since been deleted but were preserved by watchdog groups, contained blatant antisemitic tropes and slurs.

According to reports, specific comments included:

  • Referring to "money hungry Jews."

  • Making disparaging remarks about "rich Jewish peeps."

The casual use of such language by an official tasked with vetting and appointing diverse city leadership drew immediate condemnation.

ADL Intervention and Sudden Exit

The resignation was swift. The ADL of New York/New Jersey reportedly raised their concerns directly with the transition team, making Almonte Da Costa’s position untenable.

"There is no place in our administration for antisemitism or hate speech of any kind," a spokesperson for the transition team stated, confirming the resignation. "We accepted Catherine's resignation immediately upon learning of these posts."

A Rocky Start for Mamdani

For Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist whose platform has often sparked debate within the city's Jewish community regarding his stances on Israel and Palestine, this domestic antisemitism scandal is a significant political headache.

Critics are already questioning the vetting process of the incoming administration. "If they missed public posts about 'money hungry Jews' from their own Director of Appointments," noted one political consultant, "what else are they missing in the background checks for the rest of City Hall?"

As Mamdani prepares to govern, the incident serves as a stark reminder that in the digital age, the past is never truly deleted—and it can derail a political career in an instant.
